Workshop on the EUSAIR Master Plan for Energy in the Adriatic–Ionian Region: Perspectives, Key Priorities and Regional Prospects

The thematic workshop titled “EUSAIR Master Plan on Energy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region: energy outlook, priorities and prospects” took place in Trieste on 27 November, in conjunction with the 22nd meeting of the Thematic Steering Group on Energy. Organized under EUSAIR Pillar 2, “Connecting the Region,” and supported by the EUSAIR Facility Point (PP6) of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the event focused on cross-border collaboration, the expansion of renewable energy, energy efficiency and technological innovation, all aimed at advancing a carbon-neutral and integrated energy market across the Adriatic-Ionian Region.

During the workshop, participants examined the Master Plan on Energy, conceived as a strategic framework to steer the Region toward its 2050 decarbonisation targets. Speakers highlighted the urgent need for enhanced cooperation among neighbouring countries, especially given the varying national energy policies and the rapidly changing geopolitical context. They also underlined the long-term nature of energy investments and the risk that infrastructure may become obsolete, stressing the importance of coordinated and forward-looking planning.

Key goals for the Master Plan were presented, including the expansion and modernization of energy infrastructure, better alignment of policies and the establishment of energy systems that are flexible, resilient and accessible. Particular focus was placed on the Western Balkans, an area with significant opportunities for infrastructure upgrades and market development. Bringing the Region closer to EU objectives—especially regarding renewable energy integration, storage technologies and cross-border electricity links—was emphasized as an immediate priority.

Speakers reinforced that deeper cross-border cooperation is essential to strengthening energy security, improving competitiveness, tackling rising energy costs, safeguarding affordability and increasing system flexibility. They also pointed to the importance of advanced technological solutions, such as digitalisation and artificial intelligence, in boosting efficiency and optimizing system performance.

The closing session highlighted a number of ongoing strategic energy initiatives, with a special emphasis on projects that promote diversification and greater regional interconnectedness. Discussions concluded that sustained cooperation, knowledge exchange and ongoing dialogue—particularly through future thematic workshops—will be crucial for addressing shared challenges and achieving the long-term energy ambitions of the Adriatic-Ionian Region.
