The inaugural meeting of the Thematic Steering Group for Pillar 5 – Enhanced Social Cohesion – under the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR) took place successfully in Zagreb on December 5. This meeting gathered key EUSAIR representatives, coordinators, and stakeholders to further promote social cohesion across the macro-region.
Co-chaired by the Pillar 5 coordinators from Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the event also included participants from the European Commission, Thematic Steering Group (TSG) members, Croatian institutions, and leaders of strategic EUSAIR projects. The meeting focused on key topics that will define the direction of social cohesion efforts within the Adriatic-Ionian Region. Mr. Filip Miličević, Croatian Coordinator for Pillar 5, introduced the action plan, highlighting its main activities, cross-cutting themes, and opportunities for collaboration with the Youth Council.
Ms. Gabby Hagmuller from DG REGIO gave an update on the status and approval process of the EUSAIR Action Plan, emphasizing the European Commission's ongoing support for regional cooperation and strategic initiatives. Participants shared details of several upcoming events, including a regional workshop scheduled for February 2025 in Athens, as well as the 10th EUSAIR Forum, which will take place in Crete in May 2025. These events are intended to provide opportunities for continued collaboration and knowledge exchange. Slovenian partners presented two flagship project proposals centered on social innovation and youth involvement. The goal of these initiatives is to foster inclusivity and support community development throughout the region.
Progress reports were shared on key projects, including FACILITYPOINT and SP4EUSAIR. A suggestion was made to hold an online capacity-building workshop in early 2025. Participants also agreed on developing methodologies to identify and assess future project ideas, ensuring ongoing progress and innovation.
The meeting wrapped up with a series of operational decisions, including suggestions for future topics and studies under Pillar 5. Participants reaffirmed their dedication to progressing strategic initiatives and encouraging transnational cooperation. The next TSG5 meeting is scheduled for 2025, with the exact dates and location to be confirmed.
The successful completion of the first TSG5 meeting represents a significant step toward reaching the objectives of enhanced social cohesion, unified policies, and innovative solutions for the Adriatic-Ionian Region. Through continued collaboration, EUSAIR stakeholders are helping to build a stronger, more interconnected future for all communities in the region.
