The fifth report on the implementation of EU macro-regional strategies was adopted by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) on 3 December 2025.
Among its main findings, the EESC highlights the contribution of macro-regional strategies in fostering coordination across multiple levels by bringing together policies, programmes and stakeholders. The Committee also calls for stronger governance and more effective funding mechanisms to ensure that the priorities of macro-regional strategies are better integrated into the EU’s core programmes.
Furthermore, the EESC underlines the importance of enhancing transparency, accountability and integrity within the institutions involved in macro-regional strategies. It also advocates the establishment of a new macro-regional strategy for the Mediterranean region in order to tackle shared challenges, including climate change, migration pressures, the energy transition and sustainable use of marine resources.
